Segesta: Doric Temple

Sicilians discovered this enormous 5th Century BC temple in the 1800's, completely covered under a huge man-made hill. It was the existence of this hill that led to the modern understanding of how such structures were built. The builders had rolled the heavy pieces up the piled dirt to the top of the temple. However, they abandoned the temple before they had a chance to remove the dirt, luckily for us preserving it well for modern times.
